After testing the SuperMon+ V1.0, which was a slight disappointment, I stumbled over Super VICMON on the ML-Monitor road, also from Jim Butterfield. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First thing you notice are 5 HUGE! BASIC LINES standing on your way to success! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- from supermon by jim butterfield b* pc sr ac xr yr sp .;3816 31 40 e8 00 f6 .x ready. list 100 print"Sr]]]]supervicmon 110 print"qdavid a. hook 112 print"qfrom supermon 115 print"qby jim butterfield 120 sys(peek(43)+256*peek(44)+127) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- . Good thing is, it is running and it is running on default fuel {read. 5KB RAM}, and also some additional fuel {read additional 3KB Bank 0 and also the other BANK 1,2,3,5 are no problem. With just 5KB {3.5 available} and then minus 10 blocks or 2.5KB for Super VICMon, you are left with just close to 1000 bytes - approx. 160 bytes BASIC LINES = 840 Bytes The QUESTION IS! Where are those 840 bytes??? I listed the memory and it looks all occupied! VERY STRANGE! What else is there? Tape Buffer area close to 200 Bytes! Well, let's say 190 bytes available! 200 Bytes isn't the world. It can be pretty useful anyway in some critical situations. Therefore, all that would not be a problem, BUT... ...with just default RAM, VICMon will run, however very unstable and it likes to crash a lot! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you write something at $0340, dec 832, like: a 0340 lda #$00 a 0342 sta $900f a 0345 rts x sys 832, it will work. But as soon as you type RUN, it will crash! FACT IS: First usable CONFIGURATION is 5KB default RAM + 3KB RAM Expansion in BANK 0 + 8KB RAM in BANK 1 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONCLUSION AND WHAT DO WE NEED TO REMEMBER: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Supermon VICMon is obviously first usable with at least 11KB additional RAM in BANK 0 + BANK 1 That is my recommendation. When that is set, Supermon VICMon is solid. Works stable and code input is a joy. Also ML Code listing looks great.... What isn't so great, is the assembly code listing with D command {D 0340 0350}. That looks like heavily disoriented listing! ., 0340 a2 00 ldx #$00 ., 0342 9d 00 10 sta $1000,x . , 0345 e8 inx ., 0346 e0 16 cpx #$16 . , 0348 d0 f8 bne $0342 ., 034a 60 rts The only additional thing throwing dark shadows are those 5 BASIC Lines when used only with default RAM and additional 3KB BANK 0 RAM. {If you try to delete the 4 of them, so 100,110,112,115 and want to start VICMon with run..} IT WILL BRUTALY CRASH! {However, not with additional 3KB, BANK 0 and 8KB BANK 1 RAM!} I miss the 80's! Hahaha... Jim had some dark sense for humor! REMEMBER: Do not use Supermon VICMon with just default RAM. Add minimum 3KB more in BANK 0 and 8KB RAM in BANK 1. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 24.05.2026
